Spioenkop Nature Reserve is the perfect stop for a mid-week tranquil break, where only an occasional hopeful fisherman has his lines in the water. The variety of habitats provides an excellent opportunity to mix a bit of mountain, bush, wetland and grassland birding in one location and added to this is a variety of game-viewing and the chance to catch up on some of our countries history.

Lying in the Kwa-Zulu Natal midlands, Spioenkop is easily reached from the N3 that links Johanesburg with Durban. Centered on a large dam that has rolling grasslands and scattered mixed woodlands around it, the reserve attracts a wide diversity of birdlife that is mixed between the Drakensburg and more typical bushveld species, while also offering easy viewing of general game species. The area is also richly steeped in history with it lying on the battlefield route.

Photographic Tips
Driving slowly along the network of roads will bring best results for finding a diversity of photographic species. Many of the bird species are small, shy and cryptic and having the camera ready is a must for being able to photograph them. Marshy areas and seeps are excellent for displaying widowbirds.
Recommended Gear
Long-lenses are must for bird photography and it is advisable to have a good window-mount or beanbag in place on open windows at all time. Some game species are relaxed and allow close approach with smaller zoom lenses
