Lying within the heart of Zululand and at the base of Ghost Mountain itself lies the Ghost Mountain Inn.This birder-friendly establishment is the perfect launch-point for a number of photographic activities that includes day trips to the Mkuze Game Reserve, boat cruises on Lake Jozini and cultural tours in the near-by villages.

Birding within the grounds of the Inn is also excellent with many of the birds being relaxed to human presence. The large Sycamore Fig trees and Fever Trees with their yellow powdery bark attract a constant flurry of bird life, including African Green Pigeon, Black-Bellied Starlings, Purple-Crested Turacos and Trumpeter Hornbills. Joining the resident birding guide is also extremely well worthwhile as this allows you to explore the surrounding bushveld, riparian watercourses and farm dams, while being shown the special birds and insects of the area

Best Time to Photograph
The various trails that leave from the Inn are best taken as the sun pops over the horizon at dawn, as this is when birds become most active. The trails may take up to four hours to cover, particularly if you are stopping to photograph en-route. This then leaves the afternoon open to visit the nearby Mkhuze Game Reserve

Photographic Tips
It is well worth making use of the local guides that can be booked from the Inn and who know where best to locate specific bird species. These guides are also extremely knowledgeable about the history and cultural background of the area.
Recommended Gear
When walking with the guides a variety of zoom lenses are suggested as the trails provide excellent opportunities for landscape photography as well as macro-photography of the insect life, while a large telephoto lens mounted on a monopod is suggested for photographing the birds. Be sure to pack drinking water with you as well as sun-screen and hat to protect against the heat in summer.
